DID PHCN DEFY ADVICE GIVEN ON PENSION PAYMENTS?

PHCN management in which PHCN was advised to take definite measure to resolve its lingering pension issues. According to the letter, the PHCN management was advised to "present a memorandum to the federal government, through its supervisory ministry, outlining all key challenges relating to the pension fund and the inability of the PHCN to fund the pension deficit."The PHCN was also advised to "transfer the existing pension assets to a licenced pension fund custodian pending the resolution of the funding deficit and ensure that employees open Retirement Savings Accounts (RSAs) with Pensions Fund Administrators (PFAs) of their choice." Another letter from PenCom to the PHCN managing director, dated May 12, 2010, still on the same subject also noted: "the Commission is concerned that to date you are yet to avail it with the Actuarial Valuation of your pension scheme.

"Also you have failed to ensure that your employees open RSAs with PFAs of their choice which are to be funded in-line with the provisions of PRA 2004. Once again the Commission would want to reiterate that PHCN is the only federal government agency that has failed to comply with the PRA 2004 which is detrimental to the interest of the employees."When the PHCN management failed to heed the Commission's warnings as captured in other correspondences, PenCom, in a letter dated 23, November, 2010, formally wrote the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

The letter read in part: "As part of efforts to ensure compliance with the provision of the PRA 2004, the Commission engaged the management of PHCN through numerous written correspondences and meetings drawing their attention to the implications of non-compliance with the Act and advising on steps needed to bring the organisation into compliance with the provisions of the Act. Despite these efforts however, the management of PHCN failed or neglected to address the issues to date, a situation which is not only a violation of the PRA 2004 but also detrimental to the interest of the employees of the PHCN."

While notifying the AGF that it has commenced a process of initiating legal action against the PHCN and its management as provided by section 85 of the PRA Act 2004, PenCom urged the AGF to intervene in the matter since the PHCN was solely government owned.
Consequently, the AGF in a letter dated 23rd December, 2010, wrote the managing director of the PHCN and requested him to urgently furnish his office with a response, but the letter was never responded to as captured in another letter by PenCom, to the Chairman Sub-Committee, Task Force on the Presidential Action Committee on Power, dated 14, June 2011.

However, the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Joe Ajearo, did not respond to calls and text messages to his phone to confirm these cliams as at press time.

CULLED FROM THE LEADERSHIP NEWSPAPER

HYA!!!!! NIGERIAN OIL WORKERS ISSUE ANOTHER STRIKE THREAT?!!!

The nationwide oil strike called to put pressure on government to pay outstanding subsidy claims, may see workers called to action again if the government misses the two-week ultimatum set by the union.

What do you guys think?

Well should this happen, I'll definitely be working from home and marketing to companies within my area that time to save costs and move forward.

GIRL POWER - A HISTORY LESSON - MARIE MARIE GRESHOLTZ AKA MADAME TUSSAUD

Madame Marie Tussaud - making money in an area where grown men were afraid to dabble into

(born Marie Gresholtz) was in some ways an unlikely entrepreneur. But she did have a talent– for the newly fashionable art of wax modelling. Born in 1761, her skill in wax modelling put her in the employ of the French royal family, and she lived for some years in the Court of Versailles.
However, her life was to be thrown off course by the French revolution of 1787, which she only narrowly survived, and as a result of which she was imprisoned until 1794.

Turning tragedy into opportunity though, Madame Tussaud (as she was named after marrying in 1795) found a grisly niche by becoming the maker of wax death masks – initially of the guillotined aristocrats. She eventually was to take a huge risk by going on tour with them overseas to England, never to see her husband again. She spent a total of 25 years on the road, and eventually established a base on Baker Street, London.

The exhibition she founded there grew as she added models of English murderers and body snatchers to the delight of enthusiastic audiences. By the time she died in 1850, she had become immensely successful, and in 1884, her grandsons move the exhibition to Marylebone Road, where it still stands along with a number of other exhibitions that have opened all across the world.

GIRL POWER - A HISTORY LESSON - JANE ADDAMS

American Jane Addams was a 19th social entrepreneur, whose sense of ethics and morality influenced her career as much as her entrepreneurial spirit.

She was born in 1860, the eighth of nine children and daughter of a prominent Republican politician. Hindered by spine problems for most of her childhood, she spent a lot of her early adulthood trying to find a purpose in life. To these ends she travelled widely, and it was during a trip to Europe with her friend – Ellen Starr - that she experienced the impact of a settlement House on a community.
It was this house, Toynbee Hall, in London’s East End, that confirmed to her what she should work on when she returned to America. At the age of 27 she decided to form a similar house in an underprivileged immigrant area of Chicago.
This settlement, known as Hull-House, was formed in 1889, and became an institution known worldwide. By the time it was two years old, it was hosting 2000 people every week, who could take advantage of services including kindergarten classes, club meetings and lessons. She personally took care of most of the fundraising and became involved in wider efforts for social reform.
In 1910 she received the first honorary degree ever awarded to a woman by Yale University , and in 1931 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Nigeria: Labour Raises Alarm Over Mass Retrenchment in Banks

Lagos — WORKERS in the banking sector have raised alarm over ongoing mass
retrenchment in the sector, saying no fewer than 9,000 workers have been retrenched in the last 12 months. Under the umbrella of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions, ASSBIFI, labour named five new generation banks as alleged major culprits and lamented that the affected workers were disengaged without recourse to the subsisting procedural agreement.

In a statement by Emeka Ogene and Obukese Orere, ASSBIFI vowed that the full weight of labour movement would be brought against the banks should they continue to sack workers indiscriminately and fail to follow due process by meeting with organised labour to negotiate the full benefits of the already retrenched workers.Giving detail of the retrenchment, Orere said: "It is mind bugling and the process sadly has not stopped. In the last 12 months, the banks have disengaged over 9,000 workers. "It is a serious issue and organised labour will be forced to bring its full weight on the affected banks should they fail to meet with labour to discuss full payment of benefits to the affected workers in accordance with the industry's procedural agreement."According to the statement, "if the job loss in the finance industry between 2004 and 2008 was disturbing, the loss of jobs between 2009 and now is colossal.
"It is worthy of note that while the NDIC was set up to insure only depositors in the banks, no institution has been set up to take care of the workers in these organisations. "This loophole is now being capitalised upon by the CBN and the management of these various institutions, in their policies to arbitrarily terminate the appointments of their workers.
"Managements of banks are hereby called upon to respect the sanctity of the collective agreement as it affects redundancy and engage the national unions in dialogue. We hereby call on the managements of the banks that have recently disengaged their staff, to urgently engage the national unions in the sector for proper negotiation and urgent settlement of the full entitlements of their disengaged staff."
